.thanks!
- do you have any comparative numbers of Hisp vs others?
and what is your gut feeling about why this is?
if we are talking about ESL, low income, low education folk - do they even have 'net access from off campus?
if the root problem is access, that is a different Title V challenge

old hat - new body
Welcome to the temporary Blogsite for all things related to Gavilan's Grants site (www.gavilan.edu/grants/)
beginning with Title V ideas -
including Basic Skills and Technology futures
It's time we stopped spamming each other with eMail conversations
This old TechCom page was already set up, so it's a good place to start the conversations

To All Interested Parties,
The Technology Committee is wrestling with what instructors can and cannot do on web pages sponsored by Gavilan. Sponsorship means, essentially, that the web page exists on the college’s server. What that means is that you need to get a user name and password from MIS in order to set up your web page.
We are discussing two basic approaches. First we are discussing a “faculty directory” web page template that is setup by the web master. It will have your picture and basic information about you and what you teach.
Next, we are discussing “personal” web pages that you can make on your own. That is you can add anything you want within certain limitations to your home page. This is where the discussion on web guidelines starts. Our question to you is what would you like to put on your web page? A general rule of thumb has been suggested which is you should put nothing on your personal web page that you would not put on your resume. Since we have seen some really way out resumes, we offer further elaboration that there should be no commercial, religious, or political content. Advertising Marykay cosmetics would not be appropriate.
We have attached the Board’s policies that apply to Computer and Network Use. We strongly recommend that you read these policies before you answer our question.
Please send your comments and suggestions by e-mail to Vic Robinson (vrobinson@gavilan.edu) or Jane Maringer (jmaringer@gavilan.edu). We will strip your name from your comments to avoid any recriminations or embarrassment and present them to the Tech Committee. If you want us to mention your name, we will do that also.

Campus technology "priorities" list
on Tuesday we were treated to a presentation of the campus technology work-list by Mimi & Joe. We will have to wait for Jane's minutes to be posted to get the full flavor of the discussion. Many of us at the meeting had the impression was that the work-list was presented to us as an info item as a done deal representing the college's best-considered stance in these tough budget times, just to let us in on the direction of campus decision making.
It was made clear that the list was not priority-ordered, and that even if someone had "found money" to accomplish some item on the "HOLD" list, greater institutional considerations might defeat that item's activation.
Someone amiably suggested after the meeting that the presentation was to let us know to "shut up" about requests for more services or "we really ought'a do's". I think many were appreciative of the openess & honesty regarding our shared fiscal dilemma even tho we might each harbor evangilism for specific items that are on "hold" indeterminately.
Subsequently, it has come to my attention that there might have been some expectation that the committee would make a recommendation to adopt the work-list and/or address priorities, which of course we did not do, except to recommend that the list be presented to many other campus constituency groups.
At this juncture, I am inviting any and all to comment on this item and to express concerns and priorities via this Weblog.
I am turning off the e-mail notification of posts as soon as this message is published, so any ensuing discussion will only be seen by those who are members of the Blog, and the GAvmail will not be impacted over the holiday break.
Persons wishing to comment who have not yet become members should either activate via the prior invitation, or email me for a new invitation
